What You Thought Was Wrong with You May Be What's Right with You
Aloha Friend, I recently saw Catch Me if You Can, a fascinating film loaded with unusual life lessons. The movie is based on the true story of the great con artist Frank Avagnale. In 1967, at the age of 16, Frank left home and began to pass doctored checks adding up to $2.5 million. During the next 5 years, he impersonated (and succeeded in the roles of) an airline first officer, a doctor supervising a pediatric emergency ward, a lawyer (working for the Louisiana State Attorney General) and a university sociology professor. Eventually the authorities caught up with Frank (for his forgeries) and put him in jail for approximately 5 years. Then the FBI realized that Frank knew a lot more about check fraud than they did, and they released him from jail to work as a consultant to help them catch other "paperhangers." Since that time Frank has reformed his rascal ways and has worked for 30 years as one of the world's leading experts in preventing check and document fraud. I was amazed at the confidence this young man must have had to create a reality so strong that so many other people stepped into it with him. His belief in what he could do (or pretend to do) was more real than the public's proclivity to doubt him. Now I am not suggesting that you take up crime; I am simply suggesting that the attitude you bring to your life is what creates the results you get. Believe in yourself and what you can do, and the world will line up to receive what you have to offer (hopefully legal). The other poignant lesson is that Frank's criminal career was actually preparing him to help many more people than he victimized. The same keen mind that figured out how to fleece people, also figured out how to keep others from being fleeced. So you never know how a day or period in your life fits into the big scheme of things. Maybe it's all leading to something better than it looks like now. So many times I have heard that what seems to be a big mistake turn out to be a huge blessing. You never know what something is for. As Paramahansa Yogananda noted, "A saint is a sinner who never gave up." Enjoy the rest of your summer! Alan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Q & A: Each month I post one of the questions and answers from the "Ask Alan" section on my website. This one should mean something to a lot of you: I am looking for any guidance or suggestions you may have to deal with what feels like emotional exhaustion and perhaps, fear. I have just recently landed my dream job teaching at a local college - exciting subject material. I have two healthy teenagers - I am a single mom - I'm financially fine - physically healthy. In the past six months, I seem to have lost my zest...my energy...I just met with a life coach yesterday, and this feels like a good first step. Why do you think these kind of dips occur in the first place, when on the outside, everything appears basically good? It goes to show that it's not about the external condition....the internal state still doesn't feel great even though all appears well. Just curious as to your thoughts on these spiritual lows.
