How to Be an Angel
Jay Frankston grew up Jewish and always wished he could participate in Christmas. So when he grew up and had his own family, he got a tree with all the trimmings. But that was not enough. Jay wanted to be Santa Claus. One day Jay went to the huge post office on 34th Street in New York City and asked to see the letters that kids had written to Santa Claus, c/o the North Pole. To his amazement, Jay found thousands of letters from children wanting things. Some were selfish and demanded lots of toys. Others were more altruistic, asking for a blanket for their mom or gifts for their brothers and sisters. Jay was touched by the heartfelt requests, and decided to do something about them. So Jay took a number of chosen letters with him and purchased the items requested. Then he dressed up as Santa and his wife drove him into the poorest section of the city. There Jay found the homes of the children whose letters he had chosen, and he personally delivered the gifts. You can imagine the happy astonishment of the children and their families as Santa showed up at their door and gave them what they had written to the North Pole to request! Jay chronicles his adventures in his book, A Christmas Story, A True Story. I take this book out every holiday season and read it aloud with friends. Every time it brings me to tears. If you would care to read it, you will find it one of the most touching holiday accounts ever. The word “angel” means, “messenger.” An angel serves as an emissary of God, bringing the love of God into the world via person, word, object, or deed. It is rare that God just shows up through an unexplainable miraculous phenomenon. More often God works through people. If you look back on the wonderful things that have happened in your life, you will recognize that they usually showed up through a person, animal, or some form of God's creation. God works through the world. This holiday season you can be an angel by bringing love to others. You don't have to go to the post office, find letters, and deliver Santa's gifts (although that might be a lot of fun). You just have to let show up. Be fully present with the people you are with, and keep your heart open. You may find that the door you keep open to give love, is the very door through which love arrives. I wish you and yours the most joyous and blessed holiday season, and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Q & A: Each month I post one of the questions and answers from the "Ask Alan" section on my web site:
From anyone else's perspective, my life is "perfect." I have
been married to my best friend for 10 wonderful years, I have a gorgeous
2-year-old son, I am an intelligent, healthy, 32-year-old woman, and
I have a solid career with a Fortune 500 company. From my view, I am
numb and just going through the motions. There is not enough energy
in the world for me to be who I want to be at work and also at home
for my family and still have time and energy leftover to nurture my
mind/body connection. I am considering stopping the rat race of my 60-hour-per-week
career to work part time as a consultant. I don't "love" my job but
am afraid to give up my career and replace one problem (no time/energy)
with another (no money). How do I get past the fear of leaving a stable
career to do what I know is right in my heart? Click here for Alan's response. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A Cool Present: The Spiritual Cinema Circle was founded by Stephen Simon, the producer of What Dreams May Come and Somewhere in Time. Stephen realized that many of the best movies every year go virtually unseen because Hollywood doesn't believe they will make money. So Stephen took it upon himself to find and deliver quality uplifting films with a heart-centered message. Members of the circle receive by mail 3-5 films on DVD each month, including several feature films and some short subjects. The DVD is yours to keep. All for about $21.
