TAKE MONEY OUT OF THE EQUATION
While passing through the lobby of Embassy Suites, a big sign caught my attention. It proclaimed, “You should be thinking about the omelet, not the price of the omelet.” The lesson was poignant because I was on the first day of my seminar tour titled Relax into Wealth. The omelet lesson captured the essence of my theme. One of the best ways to make a dec-ision that involves money is to take money out of the equation. What would you be doing if money were not a factor? Instead of being a symbol of abundance and expansion, many of us have come to associate money with fear and contraction. When we factor money into a choice, it often obscures our vision. When you temporarily set aside the money piece, you begin to get clear about what you really want. Someone once gave me a gift certi-ficate for a free dinner for two at a fine Italian restaurant. I invited a friend, and we sat there perusing the menu. I told my friend, “Don't look at the prices. Just order whatever you want.” Then I realized that I had often made choices based on the price of the entrée. How silly, I thought, since a few dollars here and there would make no real difference in my life. Then I made a commitment that I would never again order or not order something based on the price. Thinking joyfully about what you want will bring you closer to manifesting it. Thinking about why you can't have it because of money will bring you closer to not having it. The strongest currency at your disposal is your attention. Many people take great care how they invest their money, but few people take care how they invest their attention. Whatever you pay attention to, you get more of. Focus on your dreams, and they manifest. Focus on your limits, and they seem real. Obstacles are what you see when you take your eye off the goal. When the bullseye becomes as large as an elephant in your mind, you can't possibly miss it. I'm not suggesting you make decisions that will cause you anxiety about money. I'm suggesting that you spend so much time and energy focusing on your ideals that they become powerful enough to attract the money you need. Money should be the servant of your visions, not their master. This summer, have some fun with your money. A woman once wanted to attend my Mastery Training, but feared she could not afford it. I asked her how her life was working. “Not so great,” she answered. “I don't feel good, I hate my job, and I can't seem to attract a good relationship.” “Well, then,” I answered, “I don't see that you have anything to lose.” She came to Maui for the program and broke through her fears. At the end of the week, she told me that she had phoned the airline and ordered a first class seat for her flight home – at a cost of an additional $847. “You just graduated,” I told her. When I spoke to her a few weeks later, she told me that when she came home she discovered some funds in her assets that equaled all she had paid for the program, plus the money for the upgrade. A few years later she sent me photos of her wedding. This summer, and the rest of your life, have some fun with your money. That's what it's for. Life will treat you as good as you treat yourself, so give life the hint. Think more about the omelet than the price, and the concept of “power breakfast” will take on a whole new meaning. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This is one of my favorite inspirational letters, written by a monk, Fr. Giovanni, in 1513. How true it is today!
I am your friend and my love for you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you which you have not got; but there is much, very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in today. Take heaven! No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present little instant. Take Peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is Joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see – and to see we have only to look. I beseech you to look. Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by the covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love, by wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand that brings it to you. Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or a duty, believe me, that angel's hand is there; the gift is there, and the wonder of an overshadowing Presence. Our joys too; be not content with them as joys. They too conceal diviner gifts. Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty – beneath its covering – that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim it; that is all; but courage you have, and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country – home. And so, at this time, I greet you. Not quite as the world sends greetings, but with profound esteem and with the prayer that for you now and forever, the day breaks, and the shadows flee away.
