Before You Make This Year's To Do List...

A man was walking past the home of the Sufi rascal-sage Nasrudin one evening when he saw Nasrudin on his hands and knees searching for something under a streetlight. "Did you lose something?" asked the passerby.

"My house keys," answered Nasrudin, distraught.

Being a good Samaritan, the man got down on his knees and began patting the grass along with Nasrudin.

A few minutes later another neighbor came by and joined in the search. Then another friend, and another, until a whole group of people were scouring the area.

After a long search, no one had any success. Finally someone asked Nasrudin, "Do you remember where you were standing when you dropped your keys?"

"Yes," answered Nasrudin. "I was standing over there," he explained, pointing to a darkened area quite far from where everyone was searching.

"Then why are you looking over here?" asked one of his helpers.

"It was easier to look under the streetlight," answered Nasrudin.

Sometimes we exert great efforts to solve problems or achieve goals before we give sufficient thought to where the source of the problem or the answer lives. Many people make new year's resolutions, set intentions, and write long To Do lists, and then set out on long frustrating journeys that accomplish little and leave us only more frustrated and discouraged. Statistics show, for example, that only a small portion of people who sign up for fitness club memberships at the beginning of the year actually show up at the club for any length of time.

So before you pen this day's, month's, year's, or life's To Do list, I suggest you write another list instead of or in addition to it: your To Be or To Feel list. What's the use of getting everything done (or not) if you do not enjoy the journey, and at the end of the day, year, or life you still do not have what you really want?

"What do you want to get done?"  is an important question, but "How do you want to feel?"  or "Who do you want to be as you do it?"  is even more important.  If you can answer these questions then cultivate that feeling or identity now, right where you stand, you will save yourself a lot of time and struggle.

A coaching client told me that her goal was to own a house on a forested hill overlooking the ocean, and she was feeling frustrated because it was not coming to her.

I asked her, "What feeling does the house represent to you?"

     "Security and safety," she answered.

     "And the forest?"

     "Life force."

     "And the hill?"

     "Being on top of things."

     "And the ocean?"

     "Expansiveness."

"So," I came back, "If you felt safe, alive, on top of things, and expansive, would you really need the house?"

She laughed and answered, "I guess not."

I was not trying to dissuade or delay her from manifesting her house; I was trying to hasten her getting what she really wanted. Because we are spiritual beings at our core, it is experience we seek more than things. If you can cultivate going to the experience place now, you can find the fulfillment you associated with the thing. The cool part of this formula as you tap into a sense of already having what you want, the thing often follows. We have been taught that if you do it, you can have it. Yet the game more basically works in the opposite direction: If you can get the sense of having it, the doing comes far easier.

I wish you a year of having everything your heart desires - before you even pick up your pen to decide what you are going to do to get it.

Clever people find ways to shine right where they are.

A Samurai warrior came to a Zen master and commanded him, "Teach me about heaven and hell."

The master looked at the warrior and laughed, ridiculing him, "Why would you think I would waste my time teaching an ignoramus like you? You are an uneducated buffoon!"

The samurai, severely insulted, began to breathe heavily and grew red in the face. Furious, he drew his sword and lifted it to chop off the master's head.

"That, sir," the master interrupted, "is hell."

Immediately the warrior was overcome with humility. In deference to the profundity of this lesson, he fell at the master's feet and began to thank him profusely.

"And that, sir," continued the master, "is heaven."
