If They Can Do It,

So Can You

You and I are participating in the Human Potential Movement, which posits that we are not limited to what others tell us we can do, and  each of us can do far more than we have done.

This month I would like to introduce you to two individuals who have attained extraordinary success, to inspire you to do the same in your own chosen field.

The first is Jason McElwain, a 17-year-old member of the basketball team at Greece-Athena High School near Rochester, N.Y. Being autistic and 5-foot-6, Jason sat on the bench all season and served as team manager, not player. With four minutes left during the last game of the season, the coach sent Jason on the court to play. What the heck, give the kid a thrill.

To everyone's astonishment, Jason scored 20 points in those four minutes, including six 3-pointers from way out, leaving everyone scratching their head, especially the coach.

Jason's performance drew national attention and his family received 25 calls from movie producers, including Disney and Warner, seeking to dramatize his feat.

Our second peak performer, even more astounding, is 32-year-old Stephen Wiltshire from London, also diagnosed as autistic, a savant. Known as "the living camera," Stephen has a photographic memory far beyond anyone ever documented. He can take a short flight over a city and spend the next five days drawing every detail  of the city, down to the numbers of windows on buildings. Stephen has produced mind-boggling drawings of Rome, London and -yes -Tokyo. I highly recommend you watch the video indicated below. You will be utterly amazed.

Do these two phenomenal performers indicate you must be autistic to excel?  No, they just demonstrate that you have to extricate your mind from the level of worldly thinking and tap into a vaster resource. That resource is available to you right now if you will just set aside everything that is boring, distracting, and not you, and let universal mind pour its wisdom and talent through you.

The Place Where You

Most Feel Like Yourself

How will you spend your Thanksgiving?  With people you love?  With people you wish you didn't have to be with?  By yourself? With your pet?

In a seminar before Thanksgiving, a woman complained, "I wish the same annoying people wouldn't come to our house every year for Thanksgiving."

I had to ask: "Why are they at your house?"

"Oh, we invite them," she answered sheepishly.

Aha. "If you really don't like them there, would you consider not inviting them?"

"Yes, indeed," her husband answered. "This year we are going to Vegas and not telling them."

"Good for you," I replied. "And this will be a very thankful holiday for you indeed."

I invite you to make this holiday meaningful for you because you do it by choice, not default. I invite you to spend it with people you love, even if that person is your cat. Go where the joy is. You contribute the most when you are fully present. If you can't be present, don't do it.

And if you find yourself in a place that would not be your first choice, but you feel you need to be there, decide to enjoy yourself no matter what. Do not give your power away to your mother or father or uncle or ex- or anyone. Let them say what they want to say or be as obnoxious as they have practiced to be. Your only goal is peace. Stay true to your sanity, and you will enjoy a spiritual reward far greater than a geographical one.

In the film The Lake House, one character feels lost and confused and does not know where to go. A friend advises her, "Go where you feel most like yourself."

That's good advice for all of us: Go where you feel most like yourself. Not just for Thanksgiving. Every day. It's not just physical advice. It is mental and emotional advice. Wherever you are, go in mind, heart, and spirit where you feel most like yourself. then you will have plenty to be grateful for.

Q & A

From the "Ask Alan" section on our web site:

Can I Have it All?

I fantasize a lot about men. I meet someone and then I make up all these fantasies and before I know it I'm totally attached to them -- actually, the fantasy. I am not sure how to stop. I believe that I deserve a wonderful relationship but I only seem to have them in my mind. I believe I'm beautiful but feel that others don't recognize what I have to give. I feel like I need to demonstrate who I am so that men can see how beautiful I am, inside and out. But this just gets me compliments and praises, not a companion. I can't help but fear that a healthy relationship isn't in the cards for me. My friend says that I can't have it all; maybe she is right.

Streams of Light

by Mark Tucker,

Healing Heart Productions

For over 25 years, Mark Tucker has been creating extraordinary multimedia shows with a rare synthesis of inspiring photographs and heart-opening music. Mark and his brother Dean have presented their program at many of my seminars, with standing ovations and rave reviews. They are truly gifted. Now Mark has come forth with his first DVD, Streams of Light: A Visual Musical Experience for the Soul. If you are looking for a gift for yourself or a loved one that is sure to make you feel great every time you watch it, this is surely it. Highly recommended, along with Marks' earlier works, Spirit of Love and Love's Awakening.
