Two Holiday Stories
As we swing into high gear for the holidays, you have lots of choices before you. On one hand you have the opportunity to be with loved ones, attend festive gatherings, and renew rewarding traditions. On the other hand you may feel obliged to buy gifts, show up at parties, visit family members you'd rather not, complete year-end projects with time limits, and be busier than you like. Some people really enjoy the holidays and use them to celebrate heartfelt connections and introspect upon the occasion of the completion of one year and the start of a new one. Others feel stressed by family issues and money concerns, and others feel blue because they are not with a special person or family member. So there are two stories going on for the holidays: one, what you are doing in the outer world; and two, what is going on inside you. I suggest that you use this holiday season to pay more attention to the inside story. Because you are a spiritual being, what is happening to your spirit is far more important than what is going on at the surface of your life. Life has meaning only if you do what is meaningful to you. This year I encourage you to make holiday choices from your sense of "would" rather than your sense of "should." Do your choices proceed from joy, creativity, and celebration? Or do they stem from fear, guilt, stress, and obligation? Try an experiment: Say yes to invitations that bring you life, and say no to those that deaden you. Then your holidays will really be holy. Love yourself and your dear ones enough to be where happiness guided you. Then you will be delivering the most valuable gift of all: your full presence. A couple whom I did not know well invited me to their wedding in my town. I told them I would attend, but regretted my response. I told myself, "This is the last time I will engage in a social situation out of obligation. Next time I will honor my inner voice." When the wedding day came, an hour before I needed to leave for the ceremony I decided to lie down to take a nap. To my surprise, I woke an hour after the wedding began! My inner being commandeered my action and I ended up honoring my true choice. Since that time I have made it my mission to honor my true choices without having to fall asleep to do so. Like quitting smoking or losing weight, it's either now or it's not. The one thing you cannot postpone is joy. Wouldn't self-honoring be a powerful keynote to start the new year on? What if you designated the new year as the year of joyful choices? Then all of your stories, inner and outer, will have brand new endings -- and beginnings. Have a blessed holiday season and a bright new year that brings you all your heart desires.
