A recent USA Today article featured "Things that Have Disappeared in the last 25 Years."  Among the list were: smoking in public buildings; phone booths; pop-top tabs on soda cans; and Oldsmobiles.  Most fascinating, however was the author's #15 (out of 25) pick:  Civility.  People, in the writer's estimation, just aren't as kind, respectful, or helpful as they used to be.

      We have all felt the frustration of dealing more and more with corporations and institutions that would rather have machines do their work than letting you interact with a real person. Or sending you to their website without offering you a phone number for ordering or customer service. Wouldn't you just like to reach into the telephone or computer and yell, "Hey, I'm a real person who wants to relate to real people - would you please send one my way?"

      When a company comes along, then,  that honors our humanity, what a refreshing delight!  Don't you just love it when a customer service rep laughs with you, calls you by name, and does something that really helps you?

       On a recent business trip, Dee and I were delighted to check into a corporate chain hotel and find this note waiting for us, laminated on the pillow.  It was titled:

 

 Stranger within our gates

 

Because this hotel is a human institution to serve people, and not solely a for-profit organization. we strive to ensure

 you will experience peace

and rest while you are here.

 

May this room and this hotel be your "second" home. May those you love be near you in thoughts and dreams. Even though we may not get to know you, we hope that you will be conformable and happy as if you were in your own house

 

May the business that brought you our way prosper. May every call you make and every message you receive add to your joy. When you leave, may your journey be safe.

 

We are all travelers. From birth 'til death we travel between the eternities. May these days be pleasant for you, profitable for society, helpful for those you meet, and a joy to those who know and love you best.

 

     Now that sure feels a lot better than, "please listen carefully, as our options have changed."  Moral of the story:  it doesn't take a lot to make an ordinary business or personal encounter extraordinary. A touch of kindness, a dash of humanity, marinated in full presence, and three fabulous selections result: 1. You enjoy your day and your interactions. 2. Your friends and customers walk away feeling filled and served. 3. Your business thrives above others.

    Please listen carefully, for these options never change.
