Your Niche in the New Year
I recently read a fabulous interview with science fiction master Ray Bradbury. Now a spry 87 years of age, Bradbury remains prolific, visionary, enthusiastic, and unstoppably happy with his work and his life - a dynamic model for how good a career can get. When the interviewer asked Bradbury how to remain an individual in the face of great commercialism, Bradbury explained, "You just live your life and write your stories. . . If you set out to write a bestseller, it can’t be done." In other words, anxious trying is never as powerful as creative initiative. Bradbury further noted about career, "It’s got to be fun. I've never worked a day in my life! . . . All my stories are blissful. I've played my way through life. I’ve never agonized." People who try to make a name for themselves are usually surpassed by people authentically expressing their joy and talents. As Cyril Connolly wrote, "Better to write for yourself and have no public than to write for the public and have no self." The happy irony is that when you write for yourself you send out a signal that will automatically invite the perfect readership. The Law of Attraction will take care of the details. As we move into the new year, you may be laboring over what direction you should take in your career, relationship, or life. Many different voices may bounce around in your head, echoed by people around you, urging you in directions that may be conflicting and confusing. Some people may prescribe pat formulas for how others have achieved their dreams; other people may want things from you; others may attempt to leverage guilt against you; and others may sincerely be trying to help. None of this advice matters unless it resonates with the voice for joy within you. You know what to do. Trust yourself. You are the one who has to live with your decisions, so you must be true to your own choices, not those that others would make for you. As you chart your path, this year or for a lifetime, keep two simple principles at the top of your priorities: 1. Do what brings you life. 2. Help where you can. As Frederick Buechner poetically declared, "To find our calling is to find the intersection between our own deep joy and the world's deep hunger." That intersection is before you now. When you radiate a clear signal that represents your real joy, you will reach the audience, clients, and colleagues who match you perfectly. If you emit a muddied signal, you will delay or thwart your results. There are lots of people out there who want, need, and can benefit from what you have to offer. They are also happy to pay you for your talents and services. You do not need to struggle to find them. You just need to get lined up with yourself, and then people will line up to get with you. May this new year bring you all the success, joy, and fulfillment your heart desires.
